High School Success Master Class (Self-Paced)

high school

Welcome!

I’m so excited to share with you the many things I’ve learned about preparing our high school kids for success.

I’ve worked hard to create a resource that is easy for you to consume.

Below, you will find 8 teaching videos each with a printable note-taking page, and a resource PDF with links to resources mentioned in the teaching.

Take your time to go through the materials, making note of your observations and takeaways.

You will have unlimited access to the video teachings and downloads so take your time and consume the information as it fits your schedule.

If you have any questions, email me at marianne@homeschoolingwithdyslexia.com.

Session 1:  Options for After High School

The topic for this session is learning about the many different options for career prep and education after high school. We will also look at how to know which option is best for your teen.

Knowing what your options are will help you guide your high school student to the path that is just right for them!

Download and print the note-taking and resource PDF here. This is also where your bonus guides are for this session.

Session 2: What to do When Your High School Teen is Not Working at Grade Level

In this session, we’re learning about What to do When Your Teen is Not Working at Grade Level. In a nutshell, just about all of our kids are able to work at a high school level by:

  • choosing curriculum that is accessible for them
  • using interests to increase motivation
  • remediating if necessary
  • freely using accommodations
  • modifying when needed

Session 3: Credits, Transcripts, and Diplomas

In this session we’re taking a deeper dive into:

Credits: what they are and how to earn them, including creative ways to earn credits that keeps learning engaging and meaningful.

Transcripts: What they are and how to create one for your homeschooled teen.

Diplomas: What they are, when they are needed, and how to get one as a homeschooler.

We also touch on accreditation and the GED.

Download and print the note-taking PDF here. There are a variety of downloads within the note-taking PDF. You may want to go through the PDF and download and print those as well before watching the video.

Session 4: Motivation

It is not uncommon for teens to lose motivation or resist learning during the high school years. This is never more so than for a dyslexic teen who is struggling with learning.

This session covers some short term helps for reducing resistance to learning as well as some long-term methods for increasing that internal motivation that we love for our kids to have.

You can download the note-taking PDF here.

Session 5: Independence

In this session, we’re talking about how to foster independent learning in teens with dyslexia.

This is an area where I hear the most concern from homeschool parents. We are looking ahead to the demands of college and wonder how they will ever be able to compete their assignments on their own.

That is what we are talking about in this session!

Session 6: Mindsets for Parents

In this session, we’re shifting gears a bit.

It’s time for a short, but powerful, reminder that YOU CAN DO THIS!

The reason for this week’s message is that while many of you are being encouraged, equipped, and empowered with these teachings, actually teaching this way can feel lonely at times.

Our old expectations and beliefs about what a good education is and what the best way to prepare our kids for success are, can creep into our thoughts and cause us to doubt ourselves.

We can begin to compare ourselves to other families or friends and family may question our choices.

That is what this session’s message will address.

How to have the right mindsets (and pass them along to our kids) so that we can homeschool outside the box with confidence.

Session 7: Skills Needed for College Success

In this session we’re talking about the skills needed to be successful in college (or trade school); both academic skills and life skills.

The teaching is about 30 minutes long, but there are quite a few teaching guides included. Take some time to download and print those before watching the teaching video.

There are a lot of bonus/teaching guides for this week’s session linked within the note-taking PDF. It’s a good idea to go through and download and print those before watching the teaching video so you don’t feel the need to write everything down. Let’s make our lives easier!

Session 8: Finding the Right College or Trade School

In our final session, we’re going to be looking at how to help our teens find their career path, how to find programs that will lead them there, and how to choose the best college or program.

It is a lot of information, but remember you have lifetime access to these materials so you can rewatch the video and access the guides anytime.

You can download the note-taking PDF here. There are a few guides and downloadable resources there as well.
